Our Rights of Way Officer, Carole Ruse, gets sent details of planning applications from various Local Authorities within our Area that we have been asked to comment upon.
She needs some help from Members who have 'local knowledge' of
each particular application.
If anyone regularly drives in the area(s) listed below and uses any of the
rights of way on or around them and if they feel the rights of way will be
adversely affected, they should make comments or ask for clarification
from the contact listed.
The
Hampshire County Council Right of Way webpage
offers a
wealth of information about rights of way and also information on how to
complain if they are blocked.
Please update Carole of issues that arise and of
the outcome of your responses.

Investigating our Past to improve our Future
The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded the Hampshire
Countryside Access Forum almost £50,000 to run an exciting new project Providing
Access to Hampshire’s Heritage (PATHH).
More than 100 volunteers of all ages, from school children to senior citizens,
will have the opportunity to investigate the history of their local area on
original maps and documents. By delving into these historic records, often
several hundred years old, volunteers will gather information about gaps in
today’s network of public footpaths, bridleways and restricted byways.
Our rights of way network is increasingly valued for recreation, trips to and from work, the village shop or pub and for healthy exercise. Through this project we expect to meet some of the requests for improvement made by modern day residents.
Initiated by Hampshire Countryside Access Forum, the
project has the support of New Forest Access Forum and Hampshire County Council.
Sue Coles, a Hampshire Forum member, said ‘This is a wonderful opportunity.
It will help improve access to Hampshire’s countryside for walkers, cyclists and
equestrians. It really is a case of the past informing the future.’
The two-year project is expected to be up and running by late summer. For more information, including the volunteering opportunities contact Sue Coles at pathh.sc@googlemail.com
Notes:
1. Hampshire Countryside Access Forum and New Forest Access
Forum are the statutory ‘Local Access Forums’ which together cover Hampshire,
Portsmouth and Southampton. The Forums comprise members of the public who
manage rights of way and access (eg farmers, conservationists) and those who use
them (eg walkers, cyclists, horse-riders). Their role is to advise on
countryside recreation matters.
2. This project follows a successful pilot in 2008, where 50 volunteers
carried out research in the Hampshire Record Office, looking at gaps in the
network which would meet modern needs as identified through Hampshire County
Council’s ‘Countryside Access Plans’. Several paths were subsequently added to
the legal record of rights of way, safeguarding them for the future.
3. Sue Coles (01962 864479) and Alan Marlow
(Chair of Hampshire Countryside Access Forum - 01962
890031) would be happy to provide interviews.
